If you just want sound out from the receiver to use headphones the tape out will work fine.
It would be better if you went from Source > Headamp > Phones, unless you are using the Receiver as a DAC then tape out will work fine. If you use the Pre Out then you can also use the receivers volume control to control volume whereas the tape out will just be a line level signal.
