HDTV use with Computer

I have a friend at work who is into his HDTV in a BIG BIG way.... 62" plasma to be exact. SOO he had a question as to if he could do regular use of his computer on it and build his entertainment system around the computer. I'm pretty sure you can use a card with a DVI port or a converter to the the three different plugs for HDTV.. Bottom line is that I am not sure of resolutions possible in that configuration... with the desktop look huge or small with gigantic icons. Can anyone help me out with this... I have ZERO experience with HDTV so I thought i would turn to youall for a helping hand.
 
with plasma, you have to worry about burn in, which becomes a real possiblity when you're talking about desktop use. Does your friend mind if he has a start button burned permanently into the left corner of his $$$$ display? If not, yeah the best thing is to use DVI. Modern video cards allow you set custom resolution to match exactly the resolution of the plasma, which is probably something funky like
13??x768.
 
Great. I do not think that he was planning on using it for word processing just games and internet. I guess I'll tell him to use a screen saver set for 2 minutes or something. I did not realize how sesitive those screens were.
