OK, I'm going with my parents tonight to get a new HDTV for upstairs. I know my way around TV's pretty well, so I'm not a noob or anything, but they decided on getting a Sony Projection LCD TV that's 50" or something in that area. I don't know much about the LCD projection TV's, but when I heard the word "projection" i flipped out, because in my experience I've NEVER liked projection TV's AT ALL...

I think they should get a CRT HDTV for around $1500 or so, instead of the $3000 Sony projection one. Are the projection screen LCD's any good or better than the old crappy projection TV's of yesteryear? I was just curious if I was giving osund advice...

all current displays have + and - .

you should get a CRT if:

1) you're on a tight budget.
2) you want the best picture quality bang for the buck.
3) you don't mind doing some work to get your set looking its best (convergence esp.).
4) you can control the light in your room. CRT RPTV will look faded and washed out in a bright room.
5) you don't mind the large, bulky set.

I think your folks will be happier with the LCD (it sounds like they're willing to spend the money). Unless they're videophiles or like watching TV in the dark, they'll more readily appreciate the LCD's sharp, brighter picture, and hassle-free viewing, vs. the CRT's better contrast and black levels.

The Sony XBR CRT was voted the best picture quality of any HDTV by almost every independent rating body, including Consumer Reports and CNET. Its major drawback is that it's only 34 inches, but in those 34 inches you get the best picture there is. Plasmas can get you a comparable image that's bigger, and rear projectors can also up the size, but as you know, CRT rear projectors tend to look kinda fuzzy at times, especially if you're picky, and they are always prone to burn-in because they use high-intensity tubes. I've seen the Sony 51" and 57" projector CRTs in home use, and while I think they look the best of any CRT rear projectors, there's still something not right with them to my eyes. If you're going the rear projector route, I suggest the CRT also, because you'd be getting the same projection drawbacks with the LCD, but at twice the price. Line doublers on the 34XBR960 made even old movies like Gone With The Wind look live-action, the movement was so smooth. I could go on about the perfect color and detail, but I think I'll stop now. :D

I been using a 65 inch mitsubishi for over a year, rear projection hdtv, while i admit regular tv or cable looks weird close up, dvds, satelite, and the high def looks amazing. as far as the models you have listed i cant say, went with mitsubishi because their the best at projection.
