HDR monitors, when?

Not sure if most of you catch the CES 2016 news regarding HDR with televisions it is going to come near spring time..

When I was watching some AMD material on youtube there was a mention that HDR monitors for computers would also reach us but did anyone catch a release date for those maybe also pricing?

OLED monitors are what I'm waiting for. The black levels are fantastic.
 
On the TV side of things it is mentioned that Panasonic is considering releasing more OLED TV as soon as that ball gets rolling it would not take that long for OLED to take of on other platforms.
If you look at (TV) LG 2016 OLED lineup they all have HDR/Dolby Vision.
 
OLED and LCD and Plasma have their good and bad aspects but OLED has much greater burn in and color half-life variation issues than LCD and Plasma. I think your desktop would burn in an OLED screen in a few days. My Nexus 6 had burn in after a few months and that thing was never on compared to my TV let alone my monitor.
 
Probably when OLED monitors become more widespread. HDR on LCD's practically require local dimming to work and there is no way in hell that tech would make its way into computer monitors.
 
I meant to say that for OLED it would take a couple of years still for it to take of but as soon as more brands use it the technology will evolve a little bit faster.
 
For the uninformed (me) what exactly is an HDR monitor? Is it just a monitor that has a higher range of possible brightness values (ie a brighter monitor)?

So for the sake of example say we consider a monitor where the left side is white and the right side is black. An HDR monitor would have a brighter white and a darker white than a normal one?

brighter white and darker black, and all the shades in between. Similar to an HDR photo (except you're faking the added contrast in a photo since normal displays cant correctly show it).

I believe it will be an improvement for sure, but i dam sure would not run out and by a new display over it. I really like amd but this seems like real good marketing until it really does happen
 
There using the term "10 bit panels" Where they are capable of doing a good deal more then 8 bit but the "visual effect" has to be programmed for (in case of video has to be able to support HDR10) .
If you look on youtube for AVforums HDR , there are 2 vids from 2016 where one person from THX and one from Panasonic give some information regarding this (related to TV).

I'm with you on the buying pattern though. Specifically with monitors I like to be on last years tech for price reasons.

Blacker blacks and whiter whites, but also intensity varies. Old SDR system does not make a difference between white sheet of paper under bright studio light and the light source itself, both will look equally white and bright. HDR changes that.
