This might be a dumb question, but I've never tried it.

Can I use the HDMI output off my 290X for sound only? I use a receiver that has HDMI inputs. As of right now I use a dedicated sound card, but I'm wanting to check out the possibility of using the HDMI. Obviously I'd need to use the AMD audio drivers.

Part two......if you run EyeFinity as I do, with the two DVI connectors and a DP connector, will it be asking too much of the card to connect the HDMI up on that same card for sound?

Thanks in advance.:D

yes. works fine. You have to use windows sound device selector to choose the HDMI audio out.

As for part 2... not entirely sure. Don't think it would stress it though

That should work fine. Surround functionality will come down to what your receiver is capable of (decoding vs. pass-through), but you should get at least 2.1 stereo sound on almost anything.

Thanks for the replies.

Here's my last question.....

So if you have Crossfire, could you use the bottom(slave) card to output the sound via HDMI? Without FUBARing anything?

I've just switched from NVidia to AMD and can highlight the major difference with how the audio output is selected over HDMI.

With NVidia, the primary video output device is the one that outputs audio. There is only one HDMI audio device per card.
If you duplicate the video to 2 outputs, whichever you say is the primary will be sent the audio.
This is how I used to connect my projector and hifi, the projector gets video only (non primary), the audio pre-amp (primary) gets audio and video.

With my AMD 290, this one gfx card has 5 high definition audio devices, 5 !! You select the device/port you want to use in sound/playback, although you may need to guess which one.
Havent tested it yet.

Yeah, I've got 6 ports (4 DP, 2 DVI) on each of my Matrix 7970's, my Playback Devices list is HUGE (12 from the AMD cards, 1 from USB wireless headset, and both HD analog and SPDIF from onboard audio, for a total of 15 sources!).

As for the audio devices driven by the GPUs, any one of them can be assigned as your Windows audio source fed to a receiver, without needing a display attached, top or bottom card in Crossfire (or even without Crossfire enabled or even using the bridge connector).

Awesome.
Thanks for all the suggestions.
I noticed all the output sources when I enabled my 290X.... Holy shit, I think it was 5 or 6.

Unfortunately in researching a bit more about my receiver, it doesn't do HDMI audio, just video.....

So I'm back to square one I guess.
I may just upgrade my receiver anyway, to take advantage of HDMI exclusive audio inputs.
I'm really intrigued by the AMD True Audio whenever it gets here.

Yeah you are right, there are 6 AMD audio devices per card, I missed the AMD HD device my monitor is connected to.
Strange considering there are only 4 ports on the card?

Theoretically, there are 6 per card for any eyefinity compatible card.

One for each potential eyefinity device.
