So I want to hook my pc up to a HDTV, which has hdmi and vga inputs. I tried out the vga input using my brother's vga cable, and it looked really nice. I used a dvi-vga converter, and from there, the vga cable to the hdtv. The only problem is, the cable is short, and I have to move my PC, which I don't want to do. A cable that is 10 feet long should suffice. So pretty much I have to get a new cable. Only thing is, hdmi/dvi cables cost a lot more then vga cables.

So would the dvi-hdmi cable be worth it over the vga cable?

If you think the vga looks "really nice" then I would think that would be good enough. Go with that and see how it does, and if in the future you decide it's not good enough, go with dvi.

I have invested quite a bit in dvi cables, and honestly, I have noticed no notibale improvement in picture quality, but that probably has alot to do with the quality of my displays. It's really up to you.

but what about the dvi (laptop) to hdmi (sony tv)
?

will the images be improved vs. a vga connection?

I have a Sony KLDV26XBR1 hooked up to a Vaio via VGA and looks fantastic.

I did buy a DVI-HDMI cable but wasn't able to get a good picture with the Sony's HDMI input.

I also heard that hdmi upscales.
No, it doesn't. Upscaling is something that's done by hardware (Receivers, DVD players, PCs etc.) not the cable or the format specifically.
