2 questions, if I want to use an old 20 giger as a slave drive on my comp does it need to be formatted before I can just plug it in? Also, ive been getting random reboots while im playing games, what do you think is the cause?

no it doesn't need to be formatted. you can use disk management tools built into windows to format it or just use the ol' format if you're using an older version of windows.

Ive got WinXP, so I set the old HDD to slave, plug it in and then how would I format it in windows XP? Also, if the hard drive is fuxx0red after sitting on my desk for a year what are the chances it will fuxx0r my whole comp?

It's only been sitting around for a year? it'll be fine, i've plugged in much older. ;)

go to control panel, administrative options, computer management. then go to disk management. from there you can select the unformatted drive and do whatever you want to tit.

Some things that could be making your game crash.

heat > make sure not a lot of dust and crap in your heatsink/fan
(cpu and vid card).

card or ram needs reseating > just take em out and put em back in. do ram ram before video and pci cards because pressing in the ram can sometimes un-seat the cards.

loose connection > make sure every cable is connected well

bad ram > run memtest.

Resource conflict > if you have a soundcard try putting it in a different slot. disable everything you do not use in BIOS. XP is supposed to stop this happening but in some cases it can still help.

VIA chipset > not such a problem these days, find out what drivers are best.

Bad power supply > monitor the voltage rails when doing heavy tasks. (mother board monitor or similar program)

If its a boot disc you will need to reboot, hit Ctrl-Alt-Dlt. Then it will go into Windows.

Is it screwed up? Do you suspect it's screwed up 'cause you gave it a bath in 2L of coke? Why are you asking this? Yes, the HDD could in theory bake your entire computer, but probably not if it's just been sitting on your desk doing absolutely nothing. Just plug it in, unless you suspect it's bad 'cause somebody opened it up and crossed your power wires with the ide ones.

lol, no just my old comp got fried with it in it but my local comp shop said its ok, im just over causious. By fried i mean power surge and capacitators got blown off and made small dents you can just barley see in the psu casing....
