HDD question

I have three questions...

1. I am unfamiliar with HDD's and their different configurations. I was wanting to know if you could put two HDD's on the primary IDE channel, and what would happen if you did. Would it add extra storage to your primary HDD? do the drives have to be identical?

2. By using a IDE to SATA adapter, will you get a slight speed increase, or is it for the sake of saving space?

3. By having a SATA raptor for the OS, and a bigger IDE drive for storage, how could you do this? can you access the storage drive from you OS drive? So you would have your important applications on the os drive, and then all your storage of MP3's, or DVD's and stuff on the storage drive?

thank you,
Eli Morgan

1. I am unfamiliar with HDD's and their different configurations. I was wanting to know if you could put two HDD's on the primary IDE channel, and what would happen if you did. Would it add extra storage to your primary HDD? do the drives have to be identical?

you would have two drives attached to the primary channel, if each had a single partition, they would both appear in My computer, Window explorer ect, if each had 2 partitions they would appear as 4 drives. The storage isnt "added" to one of the drives (but if you wanted make it appear that way I could show you how) the drive attached to the black connector at the end of the cable shopuld be configured by jumper to master, the one attached to the middle (grey) as slave.

2. By using a IDE to SATA adapter, will you get a slight speed increase, or is it for the sake of saving space?

niether, at this point there is no speed increase, but SATA offers a slight increase in efficiency, and a huge increase in data integrity over the cable (which combined may offer a slight performance increase) of course you need to attach to an SATA port, and that doesnt support 2 devices at this time, so 1 HDD per cable.

3. By having a SATA raptor for the OS, and a bigger IDE drive for storage, how could you do this? can you access the storage drive from you OS drive? So you would have your important applications on the os drive, and then all your storage of MP3's, or DVD's and stuff on the storage drive?

yes, you weould attach the Raptor to an SATA port, and the Parallel ATA (IDE) to an IDE Channel

so you could access the files on the storage drive from the OS drive? or does it work a different way? Does the speed in which you are accessing your storage drive rely on your OS drive or your storage drive? if it relies on your OS drive, then I dont see why people spend the money on 7200RPM drives when they could use 5400RPM drives and get the same performance.

I am new in the field of HDD's, but I am anxious to learn more about there different configurations. Thanks for helping me:)

the "OS" in effect is in memory\the processor, so its not actually in the OS HDD per se, the OS HDD is accessd when needed, the data on the Data HDD (the 2nd) is also accessed when instructed, and not through the 1st HDD, but through the southbridge, employing Direct Memory Access (DMA) typically

I get what your saying, but the theme of my question was different. Lets just say I install the OS on the raptor, and I install the bigger storage drive on my ide channel. Once I have this done, when I click on my computer, will I have access to the storage drive, or do I access it some other way? Also, by accessing files from the bigger drive, would I get the speed of my raptor or my storage drive?

One more thing. If I install my storage drive set as master on my IDE channel, and my raptor set as master on the SATA controller, how would I configure my raptor as the OS drive?

thanks
