I have two old sata Maxtor 6Y160M0 160GB drives that I put in external enclosures, (eSATA Vantec aluminum). They've been like this for 3 months or so now.

Drive 1 - 55C - 37,090 power on hours (4.2 years)
Drive 2 - 58C - 35,203 power on hours (4.0 years)

Internal drive temps, I like these temps better, but they also sit right in front of my chassis 120mm intake fan... the others get no airflow.
39C for 10krpm raptor 150gb
39C for 7.2krpm maxtor 500gb

Wait, was there a question there somewhere?

Yes, see the thread title, what are the safe limits for hard drive operating temps? I've never really found them specified anywhere.

My post was mainly just discussing. 58C seems really hot for electronics, but even though they are moved to the external enclosures, the previous chassis they were in I think they were run that hot or worse for the 4 years and hold up fine.

I'm more curious than anything, I don't keep anything critical on those drives and I wont likely change anything about my setup if say someone doesn't think they shouldn't be run hotter than 45C or so... just curious.

I always try to keep them under 40C. I have three externals next to eachother and one 92mm fan blowing in front. They never even get warm  It doesn't take much to cool them down.

The drive manufacturer's website should list the specs and how hot the drive is rated for.
