I just bought a WD 250GB Sata 16mb Cache drive installed on a ASUS P5GD1-VM board.. It doesnt feel right.. Feels like it halts sometimes.. Is there something special I need to do to the SATA to make it run right? I'm completely new to SATA..
 
Nope it should run fine, maybe run a stress test on it to see if it works ok?
 
What kind of drive is this. I have 2 x WD2500YD RE 16 drives and so far not one trub to speak of. I have them running in raid 0 with no faults.
 
Do you mean the machine locks up for a second, or the drive stops spinning? Have you updated the drivers? Are you running in DMA mode? Virus/spyware checks?

 
I have the WD2500KS..

It doesnt lock up.. Just takes a second to load things when I click a folder in Explorer.. I dont know if thats normal or what.. Everything is reinstalled on this OS.. The driver, well I dunno. I guess it's a MS Driver? I know absolutely nothing about SATA.. I wonder if there is a driver or something.. There is nothing in my SCSI/RAID section of Hardware..

I only have 1 drive.

It has to be defragged damn near every day.. Is it normal to get fragmented alot ?

If you care about those things, then it should be defragged every night automatically with a real program (not the windows defrag) like Diskeeper.

As far as "it takes a second" how big are the folders? What view mode is the folder in? What's your CPU? How much RAM do you have? You're not giving us enough information.
 
Side-Note... Win2k/XP and 2k3's defrag is basically DiskKeeper Ultra-lite. MS liscensed their engine for 2k. But, obviously you don't get any of the cool options/tweaks.

2000 does not come with a defrag, IIRC. XP's is DK ultra mega super useless. It doesn't even organize files closer together on the disk, just puts them contiguously. Either way, It is useless.

EDIT: 2K does, but it's a really old version. My bad.

Its all in standard view and folders are not that big..
 
do you have have your bios or os set to spin down the hard drives after a certain amount of time? If so that's why you see a lag when going to open files on it.

I had an issue like that once where I had my OS set to never spin down the drive but I still had "lag" like you describe when accessing the drive after it being idle for a bit...upon closer inspection I realized the bios itself was set to spin them down after 15 minutes.
 
Do you have indexing enabled on the drive?

At the times where it lags, is the HD access led on/flashing?
