A client of mine needs his storage system as follows: He needs a NCQ compatible SATA controller and about 4 NCQ compatible Hard Drives. I'm not really sure what NCQ is, i've never heard of it. could someone explain exactly what NCQ is and why he would need it?
 
NCQ = Native Command Queuing.

Its similar to the way SCSI drives do Tag Command Queuing, but is more or less the ATA implementation of it. (Ok, Tag Command Queuing has been around in the ATA Spec since ATA4, but this is different. This is present on WD Raptor drives, and is not what you are looking for). NCQ is only supported on native sata drives, such as the Maxtor DiamondMax10/MaxLine3. I believe Seagate 7200.8 supports it, and maybe 7200.7, but I'm not positive on that. Don't know as much about Seagate products.

Basically, what NCQ does, is reorder the command in a more efficient manner. Using NCQ, the controller will end up doing most of the work, but the drive still must be able to interpret the commands.

So, drives that support it:
Maxtor Diamondmax10/MaxLine III
Seagate 7200.8
Seagate 7200.7 (maybe? someone correct me here if I'm wrong)

Controllers:
ICH6
Silicon Image 3124
Highpoint 1820A

There's probably other controllers, but those are the only ones I know for sure (they are the ones I use at work for NCQ operations).

Not at present.


Also only some of the Seagate 7200.7 drives support NCQ. You should definetly check the product manual for the models that do before you buy anything.


That is there a reason why the client asked for NCQ drives in almost all desktop application they tend to be a little slower. NCQ is really only useful for the people uses SATA drives in enterprise settings where lots of random IO Is required IE databases.
