just wondering if there would be any reason for my hdd lights on the front of my case to be constantly and going off for quite a while when I'm not on my computer and it's idle. The only program I know of running in the background is NortonAntivirus.
 
Could be anything. Windows does alot of stuff in the background, especially when the computer is idle. You could always open up windows task manager, sort by cpu usage, and see if anything is sucking up cpu time.
 
If you have an average/below average amount of RAM, that activity is most likely from background services making use of the pagefile. It is also possible you have a virus/spyware infection choosing to scan the local HD for email addresses.
