My main backup hard drive was my G drive that had all my important info on there. The HDD was about 120 gigs. with about 110 gigs used. Then i have my C: Drive which is my OS drive.
When i try to boot into my computer with the G drive plugged in as slave, the computer will not boot into windows, nor safe mode. It hangs with just a blank screen like its waiting to enter the gui for windows.

When i unplug the hard drive G drive. The computer boots into windows Fine.

I need to get this information off the G drive. How could i go about doing it, if i cannot get the OS to boot to see the contents of the hard drive.

I tryed switching the ribbon from IDE 1 to IDE 2. It booted with both drives connected but windows didnt see the G drive. So i restarted and now it wont boot with that harddrive connected. How could i fix this problem?
I also checked the jumpers and those are fine.
I didnt change anything this just happened.

Im not sure what your asking me to do. You mean put the hard drive into a case?

Can you Elaborate?
 
Or use a boot cd/disk with some hard disk checking apps on it (norton, chkdsk, scandisk, etc...)
 
Yea, you said you already put it on the secondary IDE channel I believe correct?

If you didn't do that alone (no CD-rom etc. on the channel) try that. Failing that pull all the jumpers off of the drive and try it with no jumpers.

Maybe consider going into the bios and doing a manual auto detect and then save changes and try that.

If that doesn't work I'd have to tell you to go download the drive testing software from the manufacturer because something doesn't sound right.
 
I've tryed everything except the usb external case.

I ran the diskette that came with the hard drive which Western Digital provides. It checked the hard drive for about an hour + and it said it was fine with no errors...
 
don't know if you tried this but just in case here are 3 things that have always worked for me.

1. make sure your primary drive is set to be booted from first in bios.
2. try using chip select setting on the 120 and putting on the 2nd ide chain (this has worked mult. times for me)
3. also have you tried putting the hdd in another comp? sometimes my older sys biostar mobo refuses to read spare hdd.

I hope some of these help

Ill give these a try. This all the sudden stoped working though. Its worked fine on this computer for years now

I just checked Fdisk on the drive. It sees it but it says F@T22. WTF? the drive was always FAT32 for about 2 years now. I booted into dos and saw all my files, but the names were strange names like @#$@#SGa all the same size also.

Whats this all mean

does it actually say F@T22? that is seriously screwed up! there's no such thing as fat 22, fat16 yeah but what the crap? I don't know for sure but maybe your partition(s) and data got hosed. Does anyone else have a clue? :confused:
 
Yes it really does say F@t 32.

Okay i got to load windows while the hard drive was put into another computer. The disk will not work though. I tryed loading Partition magic, but i cannot get it to work. What should i do while im in Partition Magic? Could i use any kind program that will fix this error?

In Partition Magic it sees the hard drive but it says Unallocated.. The size in MB is 1,719,417.8. The hard drive is 120 GIGs
