HDD Dying?

Hello people, my mothers PC have a little (or great?) problem with her HDD in her Work PC, it was working fine until today, its a Seagate Barracuda 320GB, today when she power up the PC it throw a message "Error detected on HDD S.M.A.R.T Status: BAD, Please back UP and Repair or Replace". I used chkdsk (sadly the only available tool ATM). to check and repair first File System then cluster then both at same time, in the first test it said found and successfully repaired some errors on File system, then in the test for check bad sectors not found any error, in the mixed test not found any error I think all was fine, but at the startup after post bios it throw again the blackscreen saying about the SMART status Bad, I press F2 to continue and after that moment the HDD Light keep on without blinking(like full HDD usage) during like 20min, in that moment the system its VERY slow, after those 20min it start to blink again normally and the system start to stabilize and become fast again... its dying that HDD?.

my guess about the S.M.A.R.T thing its the little internal driver of the HDD... can be corrupted or something?. about the HDD no rare sounds, has no any kind of vibration nothing really strange physically.

Backup any important data immediately. SMART is detecting something. The drive may last another week or another year but it should be considered as a failing drive. Once your data is backed up, replace the drive.

once SMART is tripped no amount of checkdisk or anything else will reset it

all that crunching you did with checkdisk may have used valuable time remaining that this drive will operate, the next task it should perform is copying its data off to new media

Put it in a USB adaptor and try to extract as much as possible on another computer. Don't let the operating system load on it, as that will just put more strain on it as the heads move between system files and copying files.

I was able to extract some data off a hard drive by putting it in the fridge. Keeping it cool gave me more time to pull data off of it.

TY all for the replies.... well I saved all possible data before start with any test, knowing that the more amount of test the faster it could be damaged, I keep with the test and report it later..I replaced the driver and changed to a Spare machine in my house to keep it testing, after several hours of gaming, disk stress, some bench that are very BTW, it if just like the magnetic disc suffer from some slowdown and then start to work again,some test are just perfect, show no slowdown, and same score as always... it could be the Axis inside, idk, id keep the test as i just considered a dead driver, any other imput would be great to keep testing..

Download some program that allows you to view the SMART data and see what the detected problem is

there are lots of programs, I usually use speedfan

Saldy the disk died today... I downloaded HD sentinel, HDD tune 2.5 but iwas not able to run both programs, when i tried to start the machine today was unable to pass from bios post.. It keep the screen in black after run windows.. HDD light its permanent ON, but the drive its not making any movement just stopped to work.. I'll keep trying to make it work.. I report later..

you got lucky that you were able to get the data off before it died

scrap the magnets out of it and stop wasting your time
