HDD Cooling and Pitfalls

Do any methods of cooling your drives shorten their lifespan? I used to have a Maxtor drive, and put one of those coolers on it that clamp onto it like an enraged octopus. It died shortly after.

What would a fan on the outside of the case blowing air over them do? I suspect that dust from the outside would FUBAR the drives in short order... yesno?
 
Cooling drives below their operating/ storage temperatures is most likely going to shorten the drives' lifespan. Air coolers should have little negative effect on modern day HDDs. In fact some people suggest cooling HDDs actively to increase the lifespan.
