hd7870 myst under performing?

Ok it seems that turning off speedstep has helped as I'm not seeing the drop as low as i was before. cpu is still getting rather hot in a prime95 test at this clock speed and power so i may need a better cooler then stock. I will have to keep messing with it and seeing what happens but thanks for all the help i will post an update if anything changes.

I would have never thought that this processor could have been the problem but i don't understand this throttling stuff as i can seem to fully disable it in my processor as the clock still drops back to 1.6 and will even drop for a second when I'm using 100% load before jumping back up to 3.9 and i was never able to get it to disable in the hd7870

just make sure you disable C1E also, and to force your GPU to run at full speed, use MSI after burner.

i disabled c1e but cpu clock still drops and after burner with unofficial overclock without powerplay doesn't make my gpu run full speed not sure what i need to do to get it to

I didn't see where you updated your motherboard BIOS. The Myst will sometimes need a BIOS update to run at full capacity. Though if your benchmarks are in line with what others are getting, it sounds like it's working fine.

I didn't update my motherboard bios never even thought about that but i did think about updating the video card bios like others were but i think i have the bios they were updating to

This may seem like a silly question, but do you have multi-core rendering enabled in the advanced options for TF2? It wouldn't have made a difference with your integrated graphics but can provide a boost with the more powerful card. Sometimes it can also cause a slight loss in FPS so you may wish to try both settings and see if either gives you an improvement.

yes i have multi-core rendering on. One thing i have noticed since i put this card in is a buzz in my head phones that seems to change pitch with the fps and that is starting to drive me crazy but other then that i am no longer getting such dramatic fps drops and no longer think there is anything wrong with the card i was staying in the 200 fps range it seemed in portal2 at 1080p

If you using a analog headset, its probably feedback.

Games like killingfloor are not optimized for the high end GPUs today. I pulled up the requirements for this game, and min it says an intel 1.4, Athlon xp 1.4, 64mb directx 8 card, recommend was like 2.8ghz, 128mb 9600 pro. The igpu of today is as powerful as that if not more. Its no wonder why your video card is only being loaded by 30%. It was meant to be played with modern games like it came with. If you're just going to play killing floor, you could've bought a $20 NVidia 640 instead. I don't think theres anything wrong with your card. You're just playing really old games that are cpu bound that don't use the gpu extensively.

The 7870 was built for modern DX11 games. Try it with one of those. Your intel graphics wouldn't be playable on high settings, while the 7870 would be getting well above playable FPS in most games, even with AA enabled, something that cant be done on an intel IGP.
