hello all,

I have been looking into getting some good headphones and I am not too sure which ones to get. I am from canada and headphones seem to be extremely overpriced over here compared to the states so I need some advice.

I have been looking at the HD558's and AD700's. Currently the HD558's are on sale on amazon.ca for $200 while they're like 170 on amazon.com and I can get free shipping on .ca so they would pretty much come out to the same price so that is an option.

The other option would be to get the ad700's. theyre about $100 on .com and 150 on .ca so after shipping the ones in canada will be a little more but not by too much.

Overall, which headphones would be the better buy? I have heard great things about both so I can't decide. I know the hd558's have better bass but the ad700's may be a bit more comfy.

Depends on what you use them for really. The 558s are better for bass and detail levels but their gaming sound stage is not as big as the Ad700.

The AD700s have a HUGE sound stage and are about as comfortable as headphones get. With the price difference being what it is I would go with the AD700 and maybe buy a new game instead of the 598s.

Thanks for the info. I was leaning towards the AD700's. I game a lot so I would probably benefit from them more. I do listen to music in the background but I don't even have it loud or anything so I want my game sound to take priority. Plus the ad700's look so comfy.

I was also looking into soundcards and I was wondering if the ad700's would really benefit from a soundcard like the xonar essence stx? Just thought I should ask this because I don't want to drop $200 and find out that my onboard alc892 is pretty much just as good. Thanks :D

The STX is nice but I doubt you would hear much of a difference going from it to the Asus DX or whatever it is now midrange sound card with the AD700 as they do not change in sound much at all from one amp to another. In other words, they don't need much power to sound great. A sound card or at least a usb dac/amp like the fiio E10 is WAY better than the onboard crap you are used to.

Even the $20 Asus Xonar DG would be a step up from onboard for gaming (since it supports Dolby Headphone).

Personally, I think they have more than enough bass. Keep in mind they are open, so sound leaks out.
 
I have the 558s and I don't see comfort being a real issue here. They're the comfiest headphones I've ever owned.
