HD4890 Overclocking results

I just got an MSI HD4890 today and thought I would share my results.

So far I'm a little disappointed. I could not overclock it to the max like all other reviews sites claim they did. Maybe they got special press release versions. I got the Core to go up to 940 and RAM to 1150. Anything after that I would see artifacts or bluescreens. The score I got for 3DMark06 at default settings was 17470.

Does anyone know of an Overclocking tool that supports this video card so I can increase Voltage and freq?

uh... 940 is already impressive with no voltage increase...

and please do not OC the RAM, you won't see much increase over it but overheat your card easily...

also, you should be able to increase voltage with RivaTuner

your complaining?

A little. From all the review sites i've read they said that this was an overclocking beast. How's pushing the core a measly 50 Mhz a beast? My 4850 I had was able to go 100MHZ.

Oh well, not all of them can be winners.
I'm sure some people got 4890's that couldn't go 1 MHz over stock without artifacting. It happens.

Both of mine were like that until I got in the video bios and changed some settings. ;) :p

thats because all the hype about them being good overclockers was just that...hype. I swear I want to choke people when they say "get a 4890 because it overclocks like a champ". the typical oc on these cards is around 950-960 which is only around 12-13%. I am not knocking the card but I am just tired of this nonsense about the 4890 being a good overclocker because its really not.

I have a challenge for you.

Find one of those that says something good or at least neutral about ATI.
I'm not saying you're wrong about the 4890's overclocking ability, I just think you're a little pessimistic about anything red.

are you kidding me? this has NOTHING to do with it being an ATI card. I usually take every card on a one by one basis. the only thing wrong with the 4890 is that the fan is too loud according to reviews and it doesnt really oc that much like people think. other than that its a great card and i say just as many bad things about Nvidia as I do ATI. I was just stating the facts here. ;)

so you're saying a 13% overclock on a video card is "not that much"?

It really isn't, GTX 260's can do around 720 MHz or higher quite easily... That's 25% if my math serves correct.
An equivalent 4890 speed would be 1060 MHz.

if you think it is then perhaps we should be rolling our eyes at you. 13% is quite low especially for a card with "reputation" for overclocking. even the gtx275 overclocks just as good if not more percentage wise.

just a few cards I have owned
8600gt 540 to 680=26%
gtx260 576 to 721=25%
6600 300 to 400=33%

nothing wrong for expecting more, but overclocking to me is "gravy". I don't buy my cards on the foundation they are faster when overclocked. They have to have the guts from the get-go. This is w/GPUs, not CPU's because with my i7, I DID expect at least 3.2ghz as the "guts" and the rest was gravy. Gravy isn't something demanded or expected, it's a gift if it works.

In your case, 13% overclock might be low sure but how is the card otherwise? And sure, if you're an enthusiast, like most of us are, you'll find a way to make that card work a little better but in the end, I'll bet you run it at stock!! :)

...or at that measly 13% overclock because it's safe.

actually the OP didnt even get an 11% OC.

I personally expect later chips and boards to overclock much better... Or hope atleast :D

Actually it's less. I have the MSI OC version at 890. I was fooled by all the review sites claiming this is an overclocking beast. I think all cards should do 5%, then a good overclocker is 10%, a beast should be at least 20% and beyond. I'm still thinking ATI/AMD released better yeilding versions to the review sites.

I'm thinking of flashing the BIOS to increase the voltage. What's a good start without frying the card. Mayby 1 increment in voltage?

On average? From all the 260s I've seen 720Mhz isnt exactly a common oc.

I've tried increasing the voltage using the Profile Editor in Radeon BIOS Editor but I still can't get passed 940 core. Can the voltage be increased this way? Default was set at 1313mV. I tried 1323, 1363 and 1393 still no go above 940.

Profile editor doesn't work, for some reason it doesn't save.

If your going to bios flash it. This pic will help.

yeah, its luck of the draw. Buy and hope for non bum overclockers. If your really wanting something that OC's for a damn, GPUs, just like CPU's, go through silicon revisions. You can keep track of which revision each store is selling if you pay serious attention to it.

One of the things I've found every single time I've bought a video card, I always get the card that the extruder put 5X more thermal paste on than needed. Often taking off the cooler, cleaning it, and re-applying some non-sludge-like material can shave as much as 5C off your total temps, maybe get you a couple more MHz.

How did you save the original BIOS? I used GPU-Z and when I try to open it with RBE it says not a ATI BIOS. Am I doing something wrong? I have the MSI Version.

GPU-Z well not work till next update for the 4890 on the saving bios. You need to use winflash to save it.

I've tried the latest WinFlash also says the same thing. Even though the file is 128kb this time. I think it's the MSI BIOS. Can you just email me your original BIOS file?
