HD problems, need advice/troubleshooting

Hey folks, Ive lurked these boards for a year, but this is my first post.
Im using a local store built comp , about a year and a half old. No problems whatsoever with the computer.

About a month ago, the Western Digital IDE drive started acting up, I could surf, but any game like World of Warcraft the drive would start grinding/clunking/spinning up and down, ect, I have would have freezes/lockups when it was accessing the drive while playing.
I have had other HD's die with similar problems, so I called western digital and x-shipped a replacement. I had a friend do a mirror image of the drive onto the new one, and it worked fine for about a week, now the same thing has started. Sometimes while moving the cursor around on the desktop, it will freeze momemtarily and jerk around the screen. The odds of another defective HD are slim, so which direction do I go now?

Possible problems are power supply going bad/not enough juice?? Im using a no-name generic 300W power supply, and I did upgrade to a BFG6800GTOC AGP about three months ago. I have some lighted case fans, and ive noticed they dim/flicker at times under heavy load.

Only other possibility would be the HD controller is going out on MOBO??

Any troubleshooting suggestions/sources of this problem, I would greatly appreciate your input......

Thanks, Pizzafiend

to start trouble shooting Id reduce the load on the PSU and see if the symptoms disappear
poor power to the HDD can certainly cause it to "miss" a seek, everytime it does that it will recalibrate (click) which is why the "click of death" is an endless cycle as it cant find what its looking for

another thing to consider is that there is no buffer for the power unlike a mobo that has voltage regulation moduals stepping down and somewhat regulating power
thus drives are more prone to power damage.

A no name PSU inspires a ton of confidence to me
unfortunately that confidence is that its total crap and the root of your problems
please list everything your trying to power ;)

and the amp figures per rail listed on the supply

I took the side of the case off, but cant see any power supply specs without removing the power supply, theres nothing on the back other then a sticker that says 12v18a, possibly 18amps?

the power supply is powering the mobo/processor, front back and each side case fan, a cd-r drive, and dvd drive, and sb card, and video card.

I just wanted some advice in what direction to proceed. If you think the power supply could definitely be a source of the problem, then I will replace it with a good name brand unit, and eliminate that as one possible source of my problem.

Thanks so much for your help.
