HD 7970 Crossfire - Non Reference Cards?

I have asked this in a couple of other threads with no replies. If running HD 7970 in crossfire is better to have the reference design cards vs. the non reference design cards? I would much rather buy the non reference design cards but I'm concerned about their cooling methods once crossfired.
 
Based on history, shouldn't be an issue xfiring between ref/non-ref. I personally had a rig with this setup for a short time and didn't encounter any problems.

That being said, the disadvantage I can think of that may not even matter to you is that non-reference boards are sometimes not as friendly when finding a full cover waterblock. While I'm sure most people run stock cooler on their cards, it's at least somewhat more likely to consider water when you start shifting to multi-gpu configs.
 
no it doesnt matter. either way the upper card is going to run hotter than the lower card. overall though they should run cooler with non-reference cooling.
