Having problems OC'ing

This is my first post, I apoligize if this has been asked a thousand times, but this is really starting to annoy me.

I just upgraded in jan/feb of this year. I bought an MSI neo2 fisr 865pe mobo, intel 2.8c (wanted to get the 2.4c but couldn't find it anywhere at the time I was buying), I have 3500 2x256 kingston hyperX paired ram, and ATI 9600XT 256 meg, a Maxtor 80 gig hdd with the 8 meg cache (when the funds allow I want to get two 36 gig sata raptors and raid them) and I have an Antec lanboy case with 350w smart blue (i think thats what its called) power supply. Windoze xp pro with sp1 and all the latest drivers for all my [H]ardware and all the latest updates.

All in all I'm really pleased with it, since I went from a 1.4 celeron previousley with an old gforce2 gts card.

HOWEVER... I have been having problems getting this to OverClock. I used the MSI core center and played with that changing fsb setting and tipping voltage settings, and it would over clock to 3 gigs but was not running stable. It would blue screen with a rushtop.sys error and Investigating that error it came down to the "fuzzy logic" in the core center. I have upgraded to the latest core center and tried the same thing.

I have tried setting the ram timings in the bios to 2.5-2-2-6 and that wouldn't go... I have tried OC'ing in the bios with the DOT and the system will just reboot after 4-5 hours, "fuzzy logic" is just that... I cant get my system to overclock stabaly (sp?).

Now I know right off there are a few things that I can change, for example my stock cooling on the cpu and gpu cna be replaced and I could probably get a better power supply, but one would think that ocing 200 mhz would not be such a daunting task and that I would be able to get to 3 gigs with realitive ease.

Try uping the voltage. 2.8C is a good chip and a 200 mhz OC to 3 GHz should be cake, with just a little more voltage. Mine was crashing and burning (well my AXP-m) till I upped the Voltage to 1.875. Now I'm not telling you to overvolt to 1.875 (P4s wont handle it and they are hot enough as it is) but do incremental steps of .025 or .50 and run Sandra CPU test about 35-45 times and see if it's stable. From what I heard you should at least hit 3.4 ghz. Then you'll have a kick ass processor!!

Fist off, be sure that you set all of the GAT settings to auto, ram can be VERY finicky with these tweaked. Also, be sure to set your ratio to 5:4. I know it sounds crazy but running 1:1 with PC3500 can really limit you. So firstly.....set 5:4, then set fsb to about 230, this will be the determining factor to see if your CPU is holding you back because your ram will be running underspec. Give about 2.7v to your ram and about 1.575 to your cpu. Are you using stock cooling? If so, you should really re-think that option. Also closely monitor your temps. I Dl'ed an iso called ultimate boot disk that has memtest86. Run your system at stock speeds at first and test with memtest86 to ensure you dont have bad ram. you will need to boot from the CD. In general, the key is to single out all of your components 1 by 1 to see where the weak link is. Also be sure to keep your agp/pci locked at 66/33

Thanks so far guys. I will give both of these suggestions a try.

I AM using stock cooling... I was looking at getting some better cooling, but I'd have to get the purchase order signed by the "boss" LOL!!!
