Using refresh force, i cant get HL2 to use 800*600 res. and if i try, it crashes to the desktop. I even tried to go back in the nvidia control panel, and ENABLE "force refresh rates" to go back to normal, and the same problem happens again. WTF. How can I still use "refresh force" but fix the current problem that im having?

Had this problem myself, Source tries to set the res you selected with a 60 refresh but since the refreshes are locked for each res it errors. The way to fix it is force HL2/CS to use the refresh you set for that resolution. For example, for 1280x1024 I have a 100hz refresh so I load CS:S with these launch options:

-w 1280 -h 1024 -fullscreen -refresh 100

You can get to the launch options by right clicking CS:S and selecting Properties then Launch Options.

I dont understand, how now?

...um those were the directions. Load up Steam, right click HL2, click Properties then in the Properties dialog select "Launch Options" and enter something along the lines of:

-w 1280 -h 1024 -refresh 100

Of course replace the values with what your using, if your running 1024x768 at 120hz use this:

-w 1024 -h 768 -refresh 120
