Someone help me out here....I've been all around the web and while i know that most RAID gets the work done in software, that hardware raid is preferable. Does anyone know of any good, reasaonably priced hardware RAID solutions?

well, yoru tpying could ues some wrok.

but it really depends on how big a solution you're looking for. 4 drives? Promise Fastrak is hardware, 4 or 6 drives, and $200 or $300. Bigger than that, 3ware has 4, 8, and 12 drive controllers for $3-, $5, and $700. bigger than that? scsi raid controllers have from 7 to 60 disks each, but at this point you'd be better off getting a SAN/NAS.

But all in all, for a decent raid solution, expect to pay $200+ for a decent hardware controller.
 
Keep in mind there are generally two tiers of hardware RAID. The hardware ones as in they are pieces of hardware BUT they still "run in software" as in use your resources to rebuild, etc. These are the $50 generally. Then theres the more expensive ones that actually have processors on the boards. Think normal modem and winmodem. I wasn't incredibly accurate in my description, so I'll try to dig up some details...

Yah, I think I'm looking into the RocketRaid 454 solution by highpoint. It's one of those "winmodem" raid controllers. I don't think I'm hardcore enough to spend $200 on something like this yet. Maybe when i get the rack installed....

EDIT: With the hybrind solution (rocketraid 454) that needs win drivers, etc.....suppose you have windows on a 40gb drive seperate from the array, and you want to reformat it for whatever reason...while i'm sure the data stays on the disks, will you be able to access it again from just reinstalling the controller card?
