So I have an e8400 here for my small form factor pc which is to be used as a htpc. The reason I didn't get a q6600 was due to the heat output of the q6600 in such a small space with limited ventilation.

I haven't built the pc up as yet but I have the option to sell the e8400 for it's current price. And i was looking at the q8200 a 45nm quad at 2.33 ghz.

Should i keep the e8400 to fold on or get the q8200 ?
 
If you plan on doing h.264 and other HD codecs I would probably stick with the E8400. I love mine, at 3.8ghtz it actually "feels" faster than my Q6600 did @ 3.0ghtz.

The 45nm quads don't run much cooler than the old ones. If you're worried about heat, stick with the E8400.
 
But isn't having 4 cores to fold with > 2 cores? Or am I, in my noobishness, missing something?

If he is just getting the CPU to feed the GPU then he is spot on.

My GPU box is running 4 cores off of a E2140 and that is is. No cpu folding. I spend the money on the GPUs instead of the CPU.

I have special boxen for CPU folding.

 
Are you GPU folding as well as CPU?

Also, which HTPC case are you getting? I wasn't able to keep my E8400@stock in my LL V350 folding. It was too hot.

 
Looks like a good case. Personally I would stick with the E8400 for that case (better airflow than the V350). But the Q8200 should be good for 1500-1900 PPD at stock with a Linux VM SMP client.

Exactly, and the low end 45nm ones like the Q8200 also aren't as fast for single threaded stuff if you are actually using the box because of the low clocks and low amount of L2 cache. Combine that with a low multiplier so it wouldn't overclock well either. I think the 8400 is a much better solution for him.
 
Thanks for the input guys. Guess I'll stick with the e8400 as less heat concerns over come my more ppd concerns.
