Is it safe for me to take like my motherboard, ram, cpu, and vid card through the x-ray scans? I plan on taking some of my computer parts with me on carry on seeing as how I think being able to control my baggage means if I lose it, I lost it, not I lost it because of someone else's negligence.

Yep, X-ray scanners have NO EFFECT on electronics, They only affect undeveloped film.

My only suggestion is to expect some questions when you get though security. Be nice and answer there questions honistly. Remember the nicer you are to them the less trouble they will give you.

i knwo with laptops they sometimes make you turn them on to show they are laptops and not laptop shapped bombs, which could spell trouble for you.

When I was at the airport in D.C. they made a guy put his laptop through the scanner, something they prolly wouldn't do if it'd ruin the hardware.

To be honest, I don't think they care even slightly if they wreck your laptop/equipment.

I'm moving countries for a new job soon and I'll probably do something similar (I may just bring my cpu, ram and a raptor or or two and buy the rest new when I get there, I haven't decided yet).

The last time I went through airport security however, they were instructing everyone with laptops to go through a different channel for inspection instead of putting it through the regular carry on scanner.

Theres a small chance that loose components might freak them out.

You should be fine. As a frequent traveller that occasionally has PC boards with carry on, I have never been questioned about them.

The laptop rule is a bit overkill, but I guess it makes them easier to check. The xray machines they use do not damage electronics. They will NOT damage your CF, SD, or any other memory card. As mentioned above only film can be damaged. Ask to have it inspected by hand and they will, they know that the machine will screw it up.

If you have not travelled much here are a few tips:

1. Only have 1 carry on bag. The smaller the better.
2. Wear shoes that you can easily slip on/off. You will have to take them off going thru security.
3. Take off your belt, if you are wearing one. The buckle will set off most detectors.
4. While in the security line put everything possible into your carry on bag. (Keys, wallet, jacket, belt, etc...)
5. Be patient and nice. They are doing a job that frustrates many people. A quick smile and hello never hurts.
6. DO NOT JOKE ABOUT BOMBS/TERRORISTS/etc..., seems obvious but some idiot seems to do it every couple weeks.
7. Relax, get there early and "DON'T PANIC"

I've flown quite a lot, I just wasn't too sure what effect there could have been on any of my components if I were to bring them with me. For the last few summers I have made my way to a place I like to call: The mecca of the Internet. Also known as Korea :D Going there again for a visit to family, but I couldn't stand the idea of not being able to play any games (any that are worth playing anyways. Unless you STILL like playing StarCraft and Diablo 2). With BF2 coming right around the corner, I want to at LEAST be able to try out the demo (not sure how popular Battlefield series are in Korea).

And the PC rooms there. Screw that. Too loud, too much smoke, and I probably won't be anywhere where the PC rooms have any half assed decent computers.

After this trip, I think I'll have like, 40,000 or 50,000 miles...
