hard drives for plex media server

Hi,

I'm building a Plex Media Server and I'm not sure which hard drives buy.
I'm looking for 4 drives (in RAID 10). They should be able to sustain about 4-5 simultaneous 1080p (8Mbit) video streams.

What you think about the WD Purple series? They are optimized for video surveillance but video streaming should be pretty much the same thing..
 
Pretty much anything will be able to handle that including a single drive. I'd stay away from Green drives but that's just my personal preference.
 
I agree about staying away from greens. RE3 or RE4 drives are going to be your best bet for performance and lifetime but most 7200 RPM drives these days will handle that no problem.
 
the RE4 are too noisy (except for the 1TB model which is quieter) and they have pretty high power consumption...
 
Video Surveillance would be almost the exact opposite of what you want.. lots of writes very few reads...

Most video for CCTV is never played back.. or rarely in comparison to what is all recorded..

Can't say what I would use at the moment.. but i'd stay away from those.
 
Buy yourself some Hitachi Coolspin drives. Very reliable, fast, quiet and cool running.

Wrong and wrong, I have 5 in a case and cannot hear them at full tilt and the system draws 40-50W total.

I have 4xWD RE4 1TB in my ESXi host and I can hear them very well but I can't hear the 4x WD RED 3TB in the Synology NAS.

after all the specs are clear

I used Hitachi Ultrastar drives for my plex server... can't tell you how loud they are since the server is much louder anyway lol
 
I use both WD red and Seagate NAS drives in my server which uses mediabrowser (similar to plex). Any way you go you should be fine, your requirements are far from demanding for modern HDDs, especially in RAID.
