hey everyone. I have heard about the Higher end Hard Drives, over 80Gb usually, crashing alot and being very unstable. I bought a Western Digital 160GB 8MB Cache ATA133 for my new gaming machine. My question is, do I need to worry? Since being a big hard drive, do you think this will crash on me?? Thanks!
 
Depends on numerous factors. Overall, the hard drives coming out lately have been pretty stable, but I stress that you can't rely on any hard drive to be fail-safe. If you really care about your data, you will have a backup system ready to go, and frequently updated.

Basically ask yourself, "would I care if I lost my data right at this moment? How about in the future?" If you answered yes, then you should back up your important files pretty often. If not, most of the drive manufacturers have pretty solid RMA programs that will get you a new drive within the warranty period, should the drive fail.
 
I've never heard anything about large capacity HDDs being unstable as such and experienced nothing of the sort myself. However I have recently suffered failure on 2x160GB disks in RAID 0 caused I think by a power surge. Buying storage space is really cheap compared even to the lost time RMAing and rebuilding, let alone the possibility of losing irreplaceable data.

You could consider adding a second identical drive and setting up in RAID 1 - if one disk fails, the other has a mirror of all the data ready to go.
 
wait, WDs are now ATA133? this is news to me, last I knew all pATA are ata100

ive owned a 120GB WD1200JB for almolst 2 years, not one problem.
 
Naw, they are only ATA-100. Maxtor has pushed the ATA-133 specification for several years now, but only Samsung has joined them in offering drives with that feature.
