Hard drive won't format

built system in sig below last night

moved hdds from previous system

using the maxtor 40gb diamond max 60 for the system drive... install windows 2000

- created the partition
- started format NTFS
- 1hour = 15%
-3 hour ~29%
-few hours later it says that it can not format drive
- rinse repeat frustrate

do you think the drive went bad on me.. bad IDE or what

note: I have the maxtor as master and WD as slave

I have checked jumper conifg via manufacturers

any advice would be helpfull. I'm not a noob and still have teh basic try another drive and or IDE cable to do but looking for something I may be missing...... thank you
