Hard Drive Woes

Okay, so this is a long story so I will cut to cliffs....

- PC works fine

- PC has 1 of 2 Hard Disks removed (a crappy old 30 gb one I used for some back ups it was not a boot drive or anyhting like that)

- 30GB Hard disk is put in old computer, has windows installed bla bla bla...

- Go to my friends house, try to install the 30 gig drive (into my computer, I brought it with me)

- Set it up as a slave drive (no hardware settings had been changed since it was removed, so I jsut put it back in the way it was before.

- Computer will no longer boot off of my primary drive. It will start, load windows (up until the boot screen), and then go back to POSTing. (btw, safe mode with networking would work and load right the way in, but none other would).

- Since I can boot with my secondary HDD, I went into windows and checked if I could access the primary HDD and I can... this and the above point cause me to belive there is no hardware damage.

any ideas what the heck is going on?

Uhm. When you installed windows on your 30G drive, you had to set a jumper on the drive pointing that it is a Master stand alone or Master with Slave. Now when you put it back into your PC you got to set it as slave to your primary master again (if they are on the same IDE).
Even if nothing has been changed, PC is a sneaky guy...check your BIOS settings. Does it see your primary master as it should and your 30G as well? Check that you have set AUTO option.

Yeah, like Astra said, check your jumpers, and make sure the drive is being seen in the BIOS. I have seen cases of pairs of drives that wouldn't run together on the same IDE channel. Haven't seen it in a while, but a 30GB drive would be about the right vintage. If you can't see the drive in the BIOS, you're hammered. Go no further until it's properly detected.
