Well, I cut a hole in the side of one of the 5" bays on my case, and put the hard drive in there side-ways to stealth it (from the side window view) I have no pictures, but I'm sure you get the picture. it lays on the very bottom of the bay, and ive inserted some plasticy-synthetic material under the drive so its between the drive and the bottom part of the bay so it doesnt directly touch the metal on the bottom. is this safe? I dont think it will do anything bad being up there? I think it's pretty safe...unless its not, that is! I need some opinions on this please! thanks.
 
I don't see it as a problem. I've had hard drives dangling from nothing more than thier ide and power cables before and had no issues... although now that I think about it I've worked on a compaq that had the hdd mounted on it's side so no I don't think any thing bad will happen.
 
The only thing I can think of is since it is stting directly on a flat surface, the heat generated on the bottom has no where to go
 
The only non-recommended thing is mouting a drive at an angle beyond +- 5 degree's, that's straight from western digital tech support lines techs. Something about the way the heads move, the angles like that are really bad.

Same thing I was thinking. Modern drives run pretty cool, but getting some air moving under there would definatly be a good thing.
 
Alright. Yeah, I've been doing a lot of crap to my computer lately, so I'm sorta lazy, so I'll just wait to move it until my newegg order arrives. I'd rather be safe than sorry, so I'll just move it back. Thanks guys!
 
So, there's no problem setting a hard drive on it's side? As long as it's not any angle in between?
 
nope. In fact some case makers have you install them on there sides.

Also, most of the heat is transfered from the drive along the length of the harddrive and not from the top or bottom side.

:confused: I would have thought it was the bottom (PCB) side of the drive.
 
my hard drives get very warm 48 - even 49 or 50 -C my 6600gt runs fairly cool . they dont get much were they sit "air" the side panel is removed and i blast my a.c unit they still run warm if i play for a while . i did order some top fans but is there something makin them run this warm? some times the game well freeze "not often but it did happen" and video card was nice and cool. is a western digital caviar 200GB the other maxtor is 80GB slave is empty but conected but both do get warm.
 
I don't know, but I moved the hard drive back to it's normal spot in its nice little bay, so I know it'll ba safe and I don't have to worry! Better safe than sorry...much better, in fact!
