Hard Drive placement Questions

Hey there,

Heres my problem, i installed a water cooling system a while back and i had to drill out the hard drive mounts from my case to fit my heatercore in. I currently have 4 5'1/4" bays left and 2 of them are bing used for my dvd drives and one for my res/pump mount combo. This leaves me with one rack for a hard drive. Now lets say i wanted to get multiple hard drives but since i only have 1 rack left I am unable to do this. It is possible to get an external case for my hard drives and use that? Will there be any performance difference? Also any other suggestions?

You could get something like the Vantec EZ-Swap to mount them to your 5 1/4 bays . . . Keep them cool at the same time.

well i only have 1 bay free for hd.. and if i want to run like 2 hds i couldnt do it..

If the two hard drives will physicly fit in the space of a single 5 1/4" bay then it will be just a case of making your own mounting brackets.

More Info.

There are some slim hard drives out there, The DiamondMax 8's are only 18 mm tall but are also only 40 Gig in size, so two of them would work.

But most are 25 mm tall as thats the sandard size.
The 5 1/4" bay is 40 mm tall.
So you will be 10 mm short if you use two standard drives.
Have you any spare room at the top or bottom of the drive bay that the drives could expand into.

Luck............... :D

unless you need more than 400-500gb of space
why not just take the oportunity to upgrade to a bigger HD and just stick with having a single HD?

well its cheaper to get another hard drive to add to my 160gb instead of buying a new one..

couldnt i just buy an external closure for one then run a sata cable from them to the computer?

yes you can
most internal sata adapters do not support hot swap so you will always have to make sure the HD is on and plugged in before turning the computer on
you will also have length issues because sata really doesn't want cable length's over 24"
a usb2 or FW800 enclosure would give you similer speed and let you have a good bit of distance on the cables
