My old hard drive has completely bust, twas only a few months old. but anyway yes my motherboard supports harddrives with ata144 i cant find one anywhere now would installing an ata133 still work or am i being stupid?

Ive never heard of ATA144

and the difference between ATA133 and ATA100 is negligible
its simply the transfer rate of the cache being loaded or unloaded, the HDD itself cant possibly keep up with either transfer rate and thus ATA133 is just marketing hype in a single HDD

If you read this series even if you dont understand all of it, that will put you into the top 5% worldwide of understanding what metrics matter in a HDD, and transfer speed really isnt one of them

As Ice has pointed out, ATA-100 and ATA-133 drives are basically the same.

Im wondering if some marketing genius was trying to describe an IDE channel tied in somehow to a SATA controller

Lost-boy, SATA is capable of 150MB/s as a transfer speed
again not all that important a metric considering no single HDD can saturate even ATA100
