hard drive installation?

I just got a western digital 200gb hard drive. I cant get it to load in "my computer". however in the bios it clearly states it's set as a primary slave. help?
 
go to control panel --> administrative tools --> computer management --> disk managment

then find your drive.. it will say that it is unformatted.. probably disk 1.. right click it and go to format..

that should do it..
 
there is no file labled admisistrative tools in my contoll panel

edit: searches for computer managment folder.
edit:2 i found the management folder..
edit3:; it's formating. thanks for the extra assistance. I browsed past the folder about twice, and became a bit discouraged. thanks a lot of the help.

do you have win2K or something? i thoughtt it said administrative tools in there too.. hmm.. maybe you have xp home or something..
 
Yea, im using xp. The administrative tools is in "documents and settings".
I'm happy i didnt need a windows disk. a friend had me looking all over western digital's site for some sort of drive diagnostic program. I was feeling really lost for a second, heh.
 
nah.. there are a ton of programs that will format a disk/volume.. things like partition magic would have seen the drive.. you could have done it the old school way and booted from a dos disk.. and done a "format d:" but it would have been fat32, maybe even fat16.. and probably not have detected teh full size..
 
start > run > diskmgmt.msc > RClick > partition & Format

the drive would still need to be initialized even if its previously formatted with say a Win98 disk, besides youd want NTFS
 
also Right-click MyComputer icon>Manage>DiskManagement

start > run > mmc :p

of course you have to build a management console but then you get what you want ;)
