I just bought a new 250 gb wd drive and i can't get anything done with it. My winXP device manager sees it and says that it is working properly but I cant format it. I even tried Partition Magic 8 and that one doesn't see it either. Is there limit to the number of drives you can have in a winXP box? The 250 makes 5 hds. My raid controller even sees the drive but nothing else does. Any ideas?

Is it connected to the RAID controller (shouldn't be, if it's a single drive) or the onboard controllers?

It's on the raid controller but also have 2 other drives on the raid controller and they work fine, but theyre not in a raid array. It has a 4 channel controller.

Most RAID card makers will tell you not to use single drives on the controller, unless the entire set is configured to JBOD. Try it on an onboard controller to see if it will be able to be formatted.

start->programs->administrative tools->computer management-> disk management and see if its under there..if it us, right click and format it.

It's not there either. That's what has me so freaked out. I've never had this much trouble with a hard drive before
