I'm running a Hitachi HDD in my laptop and want to find some good diagnostics. The hitachi ones... suck. :D

also, it would be nice to have a cross-manufacturer one. Any thoughts?

In my experience, Manufacturer utilities only work on their hard drives.

I have tried to use a manufacturer utilities on a hard drive that wasn't theirs and I got an error every time.

Best advice, use what Hitachi gives you, try a MS disk utility, or buy a different HD.

k thx.

just discovered that the hd won't even recognize in the bios... so it's toast now.

feh.

oh well, lots of nice writing down the drain. :(

Well for the next HD, you want a SMART capable program. There are a few out there, but they aren't free.
