I am building a new computer for my grandpa and he wants some of the old microsoft word files off of the hard drive. The psu in his old pc went out and fried the motherboard and most everything else. The hard drive is still in good working condition though. It is a 120gb maxtor 7200rpm. So how do I go about getting those files off of the hard drive? His old pc was a socket a system so it was full of pretty old stuff, lol.

Well, assuming that the harddrive is not fried, all you need to do is put his old had drive into his new system. If both the new and old harddrives are IDE, make sure you put the old one on as slave. This will make sure that you boot into the new OS rather than his old one.

Once you have loaded windows (I assume you are running windows), go into my computer and you will see both hard drives.

Now all you have to do is open up the old drive, locate the files you want to back up onto the new drive, and drag them onto your desktop or wherever else you want to put them (my documents maybe?)

Once you have everything you want off the old drive, shut down the computer and disconnect the old drive.

Now you are done!

Ok, thanks. I already knew how to do that, I just didn't think about it for some reason. Anyway, I just tried to slave the old hdd and it didn't even detect it. So now what do I do? I tried to slave it to my current hard drive because he didn't buy a new one yet. I was planning on pulling the files he wanted off of it, reformat the drive, and then put the files back onto the hard drive.

You set the jumper right and put it on the right end of cable? I know its a stupid question, but alot of my errors are stupid, in a hurry mistakes.

Yeh, when it didn't show up the first time I thought that might have been the case. But I double checked and everything was hooked up correctly.

ok, I got the information I needed off of the drive. well, when I had the drive in my computer as a slave I decided to reformat the drive and install a fresh copy of windows xp. well, after i did that i found out that when i put the hdd into the new system it would still be a slave drive, so i did another reformat. Well when I go to boot my pc now it always asks me which copy of windows I want to boot from even though I only have one hdd and one xp install. Is there anyway to delete the one it says is there, because I always have to manually go down and select the "second" windows xp to get it to boot to windows. And if it tries to boot from the first windows xp that isint there, the one that was on the slave drive, it says there was a hardware error.
