Im looking to buy 2 200gb+ (200 the minimum, but more would be good) hard drives for a home file server. i want to do raid w/ mirroring, but never messed w/ raid b4 so im not sure what kind of controller to get or whats a good brand. i think sata raid controllers are supposed to be faster/better than pata ones right? i dont think im gonna be needing ncq on the controller/disk, so it's not that big of issue. here are the requirements:

1. the drives have to be really quiet. im gonna eventually add more drives in the server as needed, and id prefer for it not to sound like a jet

2. the raid controller has to support at least 4 drives.
 
Mirroring won't protect you from data failure, just from dead hard drives. Backups are what protects you from data failure.

PATA vs. SATA...not that big a difference. CQ, not likely to matter to you so take it or leave it.

I like Seagate. Hitachi is another good one. Not very fond of WD or Maxtor at the moment (other than Raptors, which are a special case).

If you're looking to do a really BIG array, as in 4-8 drives, then you might want to think about RAID 5 as a possibility, noting that you'll have to sacrifice the capacity of one drive to achieve the parity, and that the drive will have slower writes & higher CPU load. Since it's a fileserver anyway, Linux software RAID 5 might be a good idea. I'm a bit fond of my RocketRAID 1820A as the array stays intact no matter what horsecrap I pull with the OS. But again I have over a TB on that thing, and if you're just doing 2 drives don't bother with RAID at all.
