hard disk space incorrect.

i have samsung 40 gb hdd.in my bios it shows 40 gb hard disk but in my win xp it shows 32 gb only.are there any bad sectors developed how do i check.my jumper settings are all correct.
 
depends on your OS. if its 9x, then the file system (FAT32) will only see 32GB partitions. also, this was posted a while back, what MS has done is that it sees hard drives in gigabinary and hard drive companies make their drives in gigabytes.
 
BTW i am using win xp with sp 2.and before the same HDD use to show 37.2 gb now showing 32 gb .i have NTFS file system.

is there a "32gb cap limit" jumper on the back? this is here for compatibility, and it might be shorted somehow. i don't think there's a logical limit at 32gb in xp...

Hard drives are never shown at the listed capacity.
Someone with more knowledge than me can explain it, But my 120 Seagate shows as 110 GB.. My 74 Raptor shows a 68GB..
Thats just how it is. Something about the way computers figure space, that doesent really convert over into actual space....
 
even with the decimal to binary conversion
and with the overhead associated with the filesystem the loss is approx 10%
making that 40GB HDD a 37.27GiB (Binary) formatted NTFS HDD
not 32GB

Start > Run > (type) diskmgmt.msc
what is the disk (not partition but the disk to the left ) reported as

should be

Disk X
Basic
37.27 GB
Online

then if the partition is just 32GB
your options are to grow it if you want a single partition
Id recommend Partition Magic for that if its the system partition
(alternately reinstall again, or try some of the freeware on the Ultimte Boot CD like Partition Resizer)

Example :

( C: )
28 GB NTFS
Healthy (System)

if its not the system partition you can use diskpart.exe
 
i have installed partiton magic but still it shows 32gb and no partions.the jumper configuration is correct.should i try formatting it ? hoe do i know bad sectors are present or no ?
