p[H]antom made one in the past and ppl put some great suggestions in it. However, it seems to have faded into oblivion so it's time to make a new one.

Feel free to make any suggestions pertaining to the [H]orde for F@H, WCG or any other project. Some examples : Contests ideas, recruitment ideas, prizes, FAQ, etc...

Let's throw ideas and please keep it civil

A contest for best PPW (points per Watt). I know it requires a Kill-a-watt meter or someone who can do conversions correctly. Also, judging and verifying would be a bitch. But, interesting none the less.

Hire or request a Hard Modder to modify a server rack case to hold 4 mATX boards and make it repeatable. It would harbor 4 power supplies hooked up to an internal power strip and an internal KVM. Hmmm, I have a case for something like that....

(Raises eyebrow) Hmm... What case do you have? Sounds interesting...

Just thinking out loud... everyone likes custom titles... Much like the DC'er of the Month titles, how about custom titles for hitting certain big milestones either in production, points, PPD, or even team rank. Not all of these of course. Also, this would of course be totally up to Kyle as the burden of changing the titles would likely fall on him. It would give members another thing to push their production limits for, another goal.

Something like [H]ard PPD Club or [H]orde 1,000,000pts member ?

That was my thinking... Sort of like the regular forum titles but with a tiered group of titles for hitting certain big milestones. Probably not even start the titles till a user hits like 100,000 or even 250,000 points. Then maybe like

[H]orde wannabe (50K) :D
[H]orde 100K Club
[H]orde 250K Club

or [H]ardFolding in place of [H]orde maybe.

etc....

Nice idea but I think this will be just for F@H and will exclude other DC projects. A better thing would be to determine a ranking system for each project which would be similar in terms of time and power needed to reach the milestones. Then make the ranks like :

[H]orde lord
[H]orde knight
[H]orde servant
etc...

Maybe add what project in the title to know someone is a hard hitter for a X project.

IMHO, before we can elaborate on this idea, I need to check with Kyle if he is open with this suggestion. Also, we should come with nicer names for ranks, with the best ranks using the most sought after names.

However, if we want to do this, we also need to rethink the [H]ardDCer of the Month thing. I think that a concrete goal with the ranked titles is a better idea (something everyone can try to reach) instead of just praying that someone will nominate you, and even there, if there is 2-3 good candidates, we will be sure to hurt the ego of some by picking one. I think we should change this so it's only once a year, which would make things more interesting. We then let those who did make a effort by producing more than the average get rewarded with a title. The [H]ardDCer of the Year would then be decerned to those who did a lot for the team in various ways (welcome newcomers, recruit members, writing good guides, make contests, etc...).

I truly believe this would make things more interesting in the team and especially, make it more fair to everyone.

how about something from the past like StankCheese. some of the old titles were so odd, they were fun.

I run a vBulletin board and I don't believe this would be easy to do. Titles are based on post count by default with no other options, so each user would have to be given a manual, custom title as they passed a folding milestone. I just don't see this happening unless a Mod is given access to user accounts to make the manual change.

It's hard work on both ends, us folders work to produce the points, and keep the boxen running. Sacrafices! I work in an office enviorment and I am in my boxers right now it's so damn hot in my office with the box's! :p I don't think the milestones should be every 20,000 points or anything...

Yes - it would take some effort on Kyle's part since the titles would need to be manually changed. The change would certainly not be instant and maybe King or one of us could set something up that would log the milestones we come up with. It would only log the user and the milestone reached. Then one of us submit that to Kyle on a weekly basis so he is not getting hammered with requests and can simply do it all at once on a weekly or even bi-weekly basis. So - someones title might not get changed immediately - much like Xilikon does not have his DC'er of the month title yet. I also don't think the milestones should be easy. Say a bare minimum starting point of at least 50,000 points, maybe more (currently I'm just thinking on the effort required on the FAH side, we also need to see how this would compare to the WCG side). Or we could base it on work unit's as well. Then only have maybe 5 steps. We will also need to see how the WCG points and WU's scale compared to the FAH points and WU's so the custom titles take relatively the same amount of effort to reach regardless of which project you are working on.

Again - as already mentioned this might all be a moot point as Kyle may very well shoot this idea down as soon as he hears of it. :( But I do think if we structure it well and reduce the efforts required by him to deal with it, it might go over better with him when he is presented with the idea.

Exactly, the titles should be awarded only for big milestones. The first would be 500,000 as there is only ~170 who passed it and would be added on demand, not automatically. If there are ppl who fold and don't care about titles for whatever reason, we don't change it. Other milestones would be 1 million, 2.5 million and 5 millions (those are examples). On the PPD milestones, we should start giving only if there is 5000 ppd or more, for a sustained X weeks to avoid those who peg this milestone for 1 day then claim the title when the average is much lower.

What we want to accomplish here is to have title who are sought after while at the same time being realistic and fair for everyone to get.

Ehhh... 500,000 is going to take me a while to hit. Maybe we should start it at 250,000. ;)

I love the stats, think they are great, but I have been watching the last month and the updates don't seem 100%. At 11:00pm central, stanford says I have XXX<XXX # of points and after the update @ 12:00am cst hard folding is usually off. tonight

stanford @ 11 said I had 995,xxx
after midnight update hardfolding said 993,xxx

its not a big deal, but it's a little off. Maybe its supposed to be this way, I don't know!

HF server is located in TX. an hour or two ahead of Stanford in CA. That might be the reason.

As far as titles, we have PPD titles. It is difficult enough to stay chosen right now. Still waiting on more ram.

Yes, we have titles in www.hardfolding.com but the suggestions here is for the titles on the www.hardforum.com (here in other words).

As for the update, I believe hardfolding.com get the data from a file given by Stanford and this file might be 1 update late, hence why.

Those files is :

http://fah-web.stanford.edu/daily_user_summary.txt
http://fah-web.stanford.edu/daily_team_summary.txt

I searched in the daily_user.summary.txt for my stats and it's almost 5k points late right now.

Yeah, I forgot the stanford servers were in CA! I'm jack ass, but in theory if it's 11:00 pst and you show more points, it just seems it's not picking up the last stats file from stanford to complete the day. Stanford knows I have 995,xxx points @ 11:00 cst, and even at 12:00 midnight hard folding still only shows 993,xxx and given the hard folding is updated @ 12:00 midnight when I am looking on there it always says processing.

only kyle is allowed to change titles here... and im pretty sure that isnt going to change any time soon ;)

Yeah so we need to draw a line between rare custom titles and common titles.

Something like 10 mill, it's just like having a rediculous post count and getting to pick your own title, how many people actually make it that high?

Great idea... it's like the 16k postcount to get a custom title. Something so high that it's very rare but 5 millions would be a more reasonable goal with only a few folders currently.

I think its a good idea, but we are only 1 out of 29 sub forums here. It is a little unfair to others that I can only have 3 posts, but drop 5 millions FAH points and then I can get my own title. The Genmay Subscriptions is Kyle's way of rewarding us. It was a very generous offer.

I am with ICE9 on this one. Custom titles while nice would be WAY to much of a PITA for Kyle (or anyone else) to keep up with. The Genmay thing is nice and as far as I know we are the only group that gets that priveledge.

For the big milestones titles, Kyle may be open to this suggestion but we need to come up with the details. We need to make the titles truly exclusive so we should forget about a title for each milestone and only limit to the big ones... With the full details and regulations, I will submit them to Kyle and we'll see from there.

well, it's like you want to cater to the power hitters, and the ones who fold there ass off and have for along time, but will never 5 million. Maybe like how they are now.

Pick your own.....you deserve it. - 16384

maybe not something so tight, but maybe 3-5 levels? Super Folder or Fold-da-maniac etc

Everyone likes videos. How about a contest where everyone will make a recruiting video? We can specify a minimum length. It could be a serious video, or a funny video. The medium of the video could be anything, flash, quicktime, mpeg, java. Forum members then could vote to determine the winner.

Any interest? Should I write up a more detailed plan?

WCG or Rosetta@home. I'd set a box (dual core K8) to whichever project was chosen. Then as time went on boxen that I retire from FAH would be set to the 'other' project.
