[H] Cpu Scaling Review

You keep showing us that, but you forget to say that there is no AA/AF at those resolutions. Turn both of those on and you won't see much a diff if any. CPU's really dont add much when the GPU is being taxed to hell and back.

According to the benchmarks, the difference is small with last generation video cards (eg. Radeon 9800/9700), but it becomes more noticable (even in the VPU limited setting of 1600x1200..) with the newer video cards (eg. Radeon X800XT PE).

Disdussion about these CPU scaling benchmarks at Beyond3D.

All i'm saying is that gaming is not the most important thing when it comes to CPU's because as long as you have a good CPU you dont need to have the fastest to get the same performance results at high resolutions on a high end video card.

The 6800u scored higher on the P4 3.0c than on the A64 3500+.

And for some reason the 6800u scored better on all the P4 machines than on the high end A64's in that review.

Something gets more fishy about that review every time i look at it lol.

I read this again re-reading this thread and about died laughing. Here's why :D ....

I had never played Far Cry until last night. I had put my 6800GT in my main machine and a 9800 Pro in my secondary. ( I had a 9500 Pro in my main and a Ti500 in the other before last night) My buddy gave me a 128 MB 9800 Pro so decided to use that until the other 6800GT gets here......

Far Cry ran like dirt on the 9800 Pro.....I tried to set everything to high....So I'm pretty darn sure you can't run acceptable frame rates on a Ti4200/Ti4400. :p

It actually runs really well on my P42.8/1GBRAM/Ti4400. Granted, I have a few of my graphics settings set to medium.

Even with all the graphics setting on medium FarCry still looks better than most of the other recently released games. The frame rates and graphics are more than exceptable...

My 2 cents.

If I click my heels together 3x this 4200 looks like an X800....

WTF man?!? Wow! YOU ARE SO COOL!

Remember, in 6 months your card will be obsolete.

burningrave101,
have you read my post at all ? You still don't get the idea, and you're flat out wrong.
Yes, better CPUs (specially Athlon64) provide considerably higher fps compared to lower clocked CPUs even at 1600x1200 with all the eye-candy on. Look at the benchmarks where they compare *gaming performance* of Athlon64 3200+ vs Pentium4 3.2 GHz at 1600x1200.

Go, and read the benchmarks I've provided again, and read the discussion at Beyond3D forum. This CPU scaling benchmark at HardOCP is very misleading, and obviously many things went wrong.

That doesn't make sense to me at all. The review appears to be an anomaly.

Hey Burningrave101. You wouldnt be arguing with people would you?LOL :D Whats the topic this time around?

Take a look at my Sig. Is the x800xtpe a good choice for me? Will I see a huge boost in performance? Will my CPU be holding me back too much?

From the Article
Our CPU scaling experiences really helped us understand just how important the CPU is to having a great gaming experience. In real-world gaming situations with a slower CPU such as an AthlonXP 2500+ or a Pentium4 2.4GHz, the video performance becomes extremely bottlenecked by the CPU. We were forced to reduce resolution, AA and AF settings, as well as in-game quality settings in the case of FarCry just to get playable performance.

My logical mind is having a problem with why the AA and AF settings need to be lowered for a slower CPU. Please can someone explain?

I would have thought that the AA and AF have trouble keeping up when the frame rate is high, and that the slower the frame rate the easier it is to apply AA and AF. Thus a lower CPU = lower FPS = more time to apply AA and AF.

Nothing "went wrong" as you try to put it....it's called different results due to different testing...
There also is nothing misleading about the results either....as Brent and Kyle stated...the results could be repeated.....

Where does it state that the eye candy used in those benchmarks? The more eye candy you turn on and the higher the resolution the less the CPU factors into the performance equation. The majority of PC games are GPU intensive, not CPU. There are some that are CPU intensive as well such as Morrowind and Comanche 4.

The 6800u and X800XT PE are powerful enough that if you dont turn on some eye candy they can still be limited by the CPU even at 1600x1200. So if you just run 1600x1200 then yes, most likely the CPU speed is going to matter more. As you turn more and more detail on in the game though, and crank up AA + AF at 1600x1200, its going to slow down these cards enough that most high-end CPU's like the 3.0c is going to perform as well as an A64 3400+ or higher.

You can tell the AA + AF isn't cranked up very high because the X800XT PE's is scoring 64 fps in Far Cry.

http://www.ixbt.com/video/itogi-video/0504/itogi-video-fc-wxp-1600.html

But when you look here:

http://www.anandtech.com/video/showdoc.html?i=2096&p=7

You can see that at 1600x1200 w/ 4x AA + 8x AF The X800XT PE is only scoring 54.2 fps.

As you can see with previous generatioins in your benches, the CPU didn't matter at all at 1600x1200. These new NV40 and X800's are powerful enough though the current CPU's have a hard time keeping up unless you max out the IQ settings.

What the hell is up with the grenades(?) on his chest?! My God they need more polygons or AA or something... they look like complete ass to me.

Did that strike anyone else?

I don't think I've ever been that close to an enemy in Unreal Tournament. He must have been shooting someone AFK to get the screen shot :D

Oops, just realized it's Far Cry... oh well...
