I've just installed RivaTuner (two people, at another forum, provided me with two separate links to other temperature monitoring programs, but I'm trying to keep my new computer relatively free of this stuff, and didn't want to install those programs) but I'm not sure what it is that I'm looking at here?

I see something called Core Temperature, and I'm assuming that this gauge is probably the most important.

When my computer is displaying the desktop, and not running any applications, the Core Temperature reading is 35.

When I'm playing Far Cry 2 the Core Temperature shoots up to 60.

The reason I'm running this RivaTuner thing is that two nights ago, while playing Empire, my fans ramped up like crazy, to the point where my computer suddenly sounded like a leaf-blower. I've had this computer for 4 months and that's never happened before. The leaf-blower continued for about ten minutes, and then Empire just quit on me.

I have no idea what's going on here, but for the GTX 275 what's considered TOO HOT? Also, how do I get this RivaTuner's hardware monitoring log to extend further than the 5 or so minutes that it's now logging for?

I'd like to log for at least a half an hour or so?

The 'leaf blower' is most likely the video card fan. The video BIOS adjusts fan speed based on GPU core temp. By the sounds of it, it went to 100% which means the temp was quite high.

If you want to quickly test how hot your GPU is getting try running the 3D test in ATITool or if you really wanted to see how hot you can get, try Furmark (very hard stress test). Keep an eye on the temps and get ready to stop it if the temps (IMO) get above 85-90 ish. I think the nVidia spec is 105 but you really should be aiming for a lot less.

I would look at improving airflow around your video card (spot fan or something).

So for gaming, I shouldn't be going over 85?

Empire Total War, on the campaign map, is hitting 70, which is extremely odd, because Far Cry 2, at max settings, hovered around 60.

Why would Empire's campaign map send my Core Temperature higher than what it is in Far Cry 2? I fear to look at the temperature of Empire when it's running a huge battle.

Also, this Core Temperature gauge in RivaTuner - is that the CPU core temperature or the GPU core temperature?

i just picked up a 275 and if you look at the "auto" fan profile it is set to keep the temperature around 84C, with a maximum of 94.

70C is fine, even low at max power. I'm idling at 65C in here (this room is hot as hell), and my card while benching and 99% fan speed (on AUTO) hits 90C.

90s is safe. Maybe not desirable for extended operation, but shouldn't cause any harm.

Its odd, your temperatures seem a bit lower than mine... mine is around 2c warmer than yours, and my PC is kept relatively cool. Also, my GTX 275's fan isn't that loud even at 100%. It goes from inaudible@35% to a loud hiss@100%. Leafblower? Only when I turn all 4 of my case fans up to 100%.

I base my temps off of GPU-Z. Prolly doesn't make a difference.

the reason the gpu runs hotter in ETW then it does in far cry 2 is the way the games coded.. ETW is a gpu bound game where far cry 2 is cpu bound mostly.. and both games run totally different engines..

2C statisticly is within the +- variable.. could be many different reasons why 1 card runs 2C different then another.. mostly ambient temp is the biggest thing.. also everyone person has a different definition of leaf blower.. along with the fact that a case can effect the way a fan sounds as well.. depending on how muffled the sound is and weather the case fans have an effect on the actual sound and the location of the computer to the person using it.. gpu-z and rivatuner are both generally good programs to use for temps.. along with the fact that riva tuner gives the correct gpu/shader/memory speeds.. which gpu-z doesnt.. it just reads exactly whats set in the display drivers and not what the card is actually running at..

Where is his tower/computer located? Is it in an enclosed cubby/shelf? It may not be a bad idea if it is, to put the computer out in the open and try again to see what temps he's getting.

You're fine getting into the 90s even. Modern high-end video cards have two things in common: high temperatures and loud fans. You can fix both with an aftermarket solution, but that's a pain in the ass to do. Temperatures at these levels should not affect stability, I'd only be concerned about that if it was breaking the 100C mark.
