Fellow [H] members,

1. I want to buy GTA IV on steam.

2. I have a media center with a Geforce 650 and a Ivy Bridge i5-32something.

3. Can I tweak the settings enough to get a balance of nice looking and smooth gameplay. I don't need to max it or anything.

4. ?????

5. Kill hookers and get my money back = profit.

Thanks!

Game runs like crap on most systems. Looks like crap to. But yes it'll be playable at decent settings if your lucky. Usually works decently on nvidia rigs. Really bad port.

Check out Saints Row IV. All the fun of the GTAs of yore without looking like the grey pallet that GTA IV brought.

it'll be playable but it won't look very good.

Will it look as good (or a tiny bit better) than when I plated in on Xbox 360?

I will check this out, thanks for the recomendation.

I wouldn't bother with GTA4 unless you can get it for like $5 with all the DLC. At least it won't be much of a loss if it doesn't want to play nicely with your setup.

The problem with GTA4 is that it doesn't support anti-aliasing at all. I have no problem with FPS on my almost 5 year old system ( i7 920, Radeon 5870, 12gb DDR3)... however the game looks awful because of the lack of antialiasing.

Saints Row 3 yes. SR IV hardly feels comparable even to other SR games thanks to all the super powers. Vehicles become pointless quickly thanks to the super speed and jumping. I enjoyed it but liked SR2 and 3 more.

I played 2 and 3 and they were an absolute blast, but I haven't played 4 yet actually. But I figured I might as well recommend the newest

The most recent GTAIV patch (the one that comes with the steam version) actually makes the game run worse than older versions (like 1.0.4.0) because of increased shadow quality and night shadows.

If you downgrade your GTAIV to 1.0.4.0 (there are a few guides on how to do it) then I don't see any reason why a system with your specs couldn't run it and maintain at least 30fps.

Also, Tom B is correct about the lack of anti-aliasing. That issue can be corrected with the use of either an ENB config or SweetFX injector, both of which can apply FXAA or SMAA to the game. I'd recommend SweetFX in your case since ENB can be pretty demanding on the graphics card.
