I seen these Galaxy Geforce GT240 512MB on sale for $34.99 with DDR3 and $44.99 with DDR5 are they worth anything for folding at that price? I get conflicting answers on searches of how much PPD they put out im seeing a average of about 3500.

I don't have any 240s but I think that is about an average PPD you will get. The price is low and the cards new so it 'might' be worth it. Personally, I'm a little reluctant to purchase any more pre-Fermi cards for the fact performance is on the lower end of the scale and longevity is in question. If you do get one or more cards and you're already running the SMP client, the GPU will starve it of CPU cycles. Since these cards don't produce an appreciably high PPD, it won't be worth the drop you'll likely see hit the CPU client. Food for thought.

250's are the new 8800GT I think, so that estimate seems in line

I was thinking about these for some of my less powerful machines. I have a Pentium D running that I could put one in for example and it would out perform the CPU. Also I could put these in some clients computers (with their permission of course) and use them. Do you guys think 1 250 would out perform 2x 240's?

Yea

the 240 is the 112 shader card, the final gen of the 88GT
the 250 is the 128 shader card, the final gen of the 88GTS (512)

For ref my 88GT puts out about 5k on a heavy shader OC, but that's on GPU2 still
my GX2's (each core is a 128 shader GTS I think) one side gets about 5300 on a very slight OC (GPU2)

Keep in mind GPU3 will be the only option some time down the line.

What he said. Even at 3500-4000 ppd, forless than 40$ that not bad for a beginner folder (hint) who wants to get in the drawings we do here (hint!)

My GT 240 will peg between 3600-4000 ppd which isn't bad considering that the card only pulls 70 watts at load. Its a great beginner card as has already been said.

yep its not bad.. but i like my power hungry 8800GS's 96 SP's and i get 400-500 more PPD then the GT 240 but im running a pretty crazy overclock 700/1728/1000 (stock 555/1350/800)

If it can produce ~4000+PPD on a consistent basis then go for it. It's cheaper than many used folding-capable cards are in my area, and this is NIB. Again, I have to mention that if you are running the SMP client on an older system, it's conceivable there might be little net gain in production running SMP with this card. It all depends what system you have and what clients you are intending to run. In any event, it's so cheap that's practically a non-issue.

I have an overclocked GT 240 running right now and producing about 4000-4200PPD. The GT 240 is a GT200 card with 96 shaders, and it requires much less power to run compared to older G92 cards. For $35, it's worth grabbing a few.

Does the memory matter much for folding? Should I get the DDR3 or DDR5? I plan on shutting down folding on the less powerful machines and just run on the GPU for those systems. The Pentium D is only pulling about 600ppd, so I dont really mind losing that to gain roughly 3k more.

The other thing is I have a lot of clients that are finally moving to multi monitor systems. I can easily off load these cards when GPU2 is no longer running to them for that purpose, and save them money.

My 250 produced 6-6.5k PPD at stock clocks depending on WU, Personally i would go for the 250 - less clients = less hassle
