Graphics lockup when overclocking FSB?

For some reason, when I overclock my FSB to 280 (HTT 3x, RAM 3:2) I get lockups everytime I try to run 3dmark or run any game. I have tried adjusting the voltage on the AGP slot but nothing seemed to work. The AGP is fixed at 66mhz so I don't see how the FSB is making my video card lockup. The problem persists all the way down to 260. Everything is fine at this speed. Is it possible the pci lock is not working? Is there a program to check?

Specs are in sig

Interesting; i am having the same problem but my board manages to get to 265x9 before it dies. Nothing i do makes any difference... i'm on an A8V here, same CPU as you. Does your machine test prime stable at those kinds of speeds (270+?) Mine dies after 14 minutes of prime95 at 265fsb and dies in any game.

What do you think every mobo is made the same? Every motherboard has its limits. You have obviously found yours. My mobo limit is around 225~230 usually 227 but at 225 for stability. I can EASILY throw my CPU @ 240 FSB with NO problem. I can get into windows with no problem, but can I play a game for 30 minutes? Or encode anything? No.

Option: Volt mod the Northbridge

It may be there is an issue with your AGP/PCI multiplier lock not working. I'd get a copy of wCPUID to check.

That's a VIA chipset, right? Some revisions of VIA chipsets (or in some cases, manufacturer's implementation of the BIOS for the accompanying mainboard) had trouble with the AGP/PCI lock. wCPUID should tell you what FSB things are running at if I recall correctly.

Note: 280 is a fairly high FSB...it could be that you've maxed out what your memory or your CPU can do.

well, it was running at 280FSB prime95 stable for 8 hours before I decided to try stressing the video as well. Once I noticed that I couldn't run any games, I stopped priming to find out what the problem was.

@LoneWolf, yes it's the VIA chipset. I got the latest 4in1s installed as well. I will check out CPUID in a bit and see what I find. Memory was only running at 186ish.

@Rad777, how hard is it to voltmod the NB?

I had a similar problem. My machine was rock solid at 2.6GHz when I had a GF4-440mx installed. Then I upgraded and now it won't overclock. Even upping the fsb by one MHz will cause the PC to lock while starting windows. I've done everything bar a fresh reinstall (I'll wait until I get a decent gfx card). Upped (and lowered) various voltages but can't seem to get it to work. Tried umpteen different driver cleaner tools but none allow me OC again.

did you up your AGP voltage? that may help

yup, went to about 1.65 but didn't go any higher. Wasn't sure what a safe voltage is for AGP. Didn't do anything for me though.

Check your case temps, if they've gone up massively your vidcard may not be able to take it.

I've been having that problem with this borrowed 9700 versus my old 9000 Pro, since upgrading I can't overclock and hafta have a box fan blowing into my tower to keep source and WoW from locking the vidcard and defaulting into software mode (which then crashes the system upon returning to the game).

But I think if I got a card with the huge zalman or anything that puts HSFs on all the RAm chips as well as the core I'd be alright here. Time will tell. That and the gaming bomb 2, c'mon chenbro ship that beast to newegg!
