GPU Upgrade...

Well i'm not really up to spend 200-300 for a GPU... going from a 9800GT i'm sure I'll see some big gains.
 
I'm trying to decide between a 6850 and 560, myself. I've experienced both. Truthfully, I've been in Nvidia's camp for a while and I do like PhysX. That said, the couple of days I've had with the 6850 have been nice. There is a difference in how each of them display graphics. It's mainly slight color and contrast differences, but I do like the way ATI displays better than Nvidia (even after hours of trying to tweak things through driver settings). I've decided that missing PhysX isn't that big of a deal. I'm still uncertain. To go with a 6870 will cost me about $35 more. With AMD's new 7000 architecture and Kepler just around the corner, it's difficult to justify spending more than I have. I'd like some input as well.

Valis1, if I were you, the 6870 is worth the extra $15.
 
Hey, I am not trying to hijack this thread but I am kinda in the same boat as you and maybe we can get some replies to accommodate both of us.

I am also looking to upgrade or just change GPUs. I went from a 9800GT to a GTX-480. The GTX-480 is great and powerful but currently it is generating too much heat.

All I really do on my computer is watch movies/TV and occasionally play games. I usually watch digital Blue-ray movies and the games I play sometimes need a powerful card. I use PowerDVD because it uses Nvidia hardware acceleration and the playback quality is amazing. It blows VLC and the like away.

Recently I have had issues with the 480 getting too hot and/or locking up my PC. I was tossing around the idea of getting an RMA but I feel like I will just end up with another hot GPU.

Essentially I am one the fence here. I dont know if I should sell the 480 and get a different GPU or if there is a fix I can apply with out voiding my warranty. If i was to get a new GPU i would not want to spend too much as money is very tight right now.

I was looking at ATI cards but they would not work with PowerDVD hardware acceleration which is a key feature for me. Unless there is an alternative video player with ATI hardware acceleration.

Again not trying to hijack the thread but I feel our situation is similar and I think the responses will benefit both of us.
 
Nevermind... I fixed it. I guess I had it overclocked and forgot. I returned it back to stock and ramped the fan up a little now it's in the high 60s and mid 70s during game play. No more artifacting.
