GPU + SMP in one box?

I'm looking into getting a short term replacement video card until I figure out what kind of card I really want to get, so I was looking at the x1950s. I'd be putting this in a machine w/ an X2 4800+ running the SMP client.

Now, on the F@H FAQ, it says that there's a recommended 25% CPU overhead for the GPU client. Is this really a realistic overhead? If so, would it be more beneficial pointwise to run GPU + one standard client verse taking myself off of the SMP client?
 
X1950 what? There's a big difference in PPD between the XT and Pro.

I don't believe SMP+GPU is possible because the GPU client polls 1 CPU constantly to 100% load. Your only options would be GPU + Uniprocessor or SMP. The GPU client has predictable PPD, so once you settle on a card, you should be able to answer this question on your own.

What is your PPD right now?

Also, are you planning on using this machine for other things? The GPU client hijacks the machine pretty badly.

 
Pretty much the SMP client runs mid 800s PPD. The box is a gaming rig primarily....however, it's not really playing many games right now because i'm not home a lot, so i'm assuming 95%+ folding time (if not more)
 
If your only running ~850's PpD, then slowing the client down by adding the GPU client will mean you will start missing deadlines.
So thats out.

Also the GPU + CPU client will only net you ~850 PpD but draw ~100 watts extra to run the GPU client.
So unless you have free power then thats out.

You left with keep running the SMP client.

If a CPU can run the SMP client then stick to that.
It only if you cannot run the SMP client should you look at the GPU client for extra points.
