GPU PSU good idea?

depends on the price right? I can get a corsair 450 for $50 and do the same thing. except that I bought a 280 and not a 4870X2 so I don't need too. buying a dedicated psu isn't a bad idea as it gives a constant supply to vital parts.

there is a thermaltake? psu that does this too. might be cheaper. hope that helps.

Assuming you'd be removing your current pair of video cards in favour of the 4870X2, you'd actually probably be fine with your current PSU. That supplemental PSU would do the trick, but it isn't really necessary. Also, chances are it would be cheaper and better to just replace your current PSU with something better if it did come to that, since you can get the Corsair TX750 for under $100 these days. Combined with the resale value of your current unit, it would be a little pointless to buy an extra mini PSU just for the video card.

I figure I'd upgrade to the Corsair 1000HX whenever there's a sale again, but I just wanted to know if people had any experience with them. ^^

I have a Thermaltake unit I use to power an 8800GTX in a Dell Optiplex 755 I have
Its a dedicated folding box so the CPU and GPU are at 100% load 24/7..so far not a hitch on the PSU or card..
