GPU Passthrough in VMware - Can multiple VMs share single GPU?

I'm looking to build a home VMware lab mostly for self-training and development. I'm currently looking at a single mATX board (X10SL7), and therefore my number of expansion devices is limited.

I'm considering replacing my current Windows 7 desktop with a GPU with a VM. I know I can pass the GPU through to a single VM, but would it be possible to share the GPU with something like vSGA? I can't say I'm very familiar with how that setup works in practice.

My goal would be to support my desktop VM that I occasionally game on, but it would be a more efficient use of a GPU if I could also use it with another VM, like an HTPC or Steam Box, since I wouldn't be using both at the same time. I'm not overly concerned about cost, and I'm aware that I'd need a potentially more expensive GPU to accomplish this.

You can buy a K1 Grid card for like 1.6k at this point, or you can mod a $100 card to appear as if it is a K1 since you don't actually need K1 performance. Better have awesome soldering skills for that.
 
The Grid is WAY more than I need for sure. The modification part doesn't scare me, but that's really not quite the exercise I'm looking for, although I've done my fair share of hardware mods over the years and have enjoyed it.

Has anyone done dVGA passthrough with a dual-GPU card to two VMs? It looks like a single VM passthrough is simple enough, but if only one VM can use a GPU then I'd just rather build a separate machine anyway.
