GPU Passthrough and Power

I've been debating GPU passthrough for a while now but I had a question that I haven't found anywhere online.

If I shut down the VM that is using the GPU, how is power handled? Will the GPU just use idle power until I bring the VM back up?
 
jahsoul, it (should) definitely do that as long as the VM was brought down cleanly. If it was unclean I'd still expect it to, but with less confidence. There's the possibility for some funky states if it's unclean.

There's nothing controlling the GPU at that point, so it'll do exactly what it would do if it was in the machine with no driver.
 
I don't see why the GPU should "care" if the VM was brought down "cleanly" or not

If a game crashes on a gaming PC, the GPU of that PC just stops executing the code so should be the same if a VM crashes, the GPU just stops doing the VM stuff.
 
Interesting question.

My guess is that its still powered, but takes a small amount of energy like when you sit in 2d (desktop mode) compare to extensive 3d gaming.

You could measure the consumption using kill a watt or similar measurement tools to see if it actually drop when you power it off.

Do you want to do some gaming ?
If you only want a desktop , i am pretty sure small card dont use much power.

This has been my experience with xenserver at least. The difference between the GPU running a desktop and in standby isn't much (to me at least) 10, 20W tops. To be honest it's difficult to tell though; firing up one of my desktop VM's adds noticeable load to the otherwise near idle CPU.
