GPU overclocking results

I just received a Gigabyte GTX 970 G1. I ran Valley and some games to record benchmarks with stock settings at 1440p. After raising the core clock by 150 and the mem clock by 200 I reran Valley and benchmarks. In Valley I received a 3.7 fps raise. I tried to raise both core and memory clock a little, but received less fps. Same with testing in game.

Would someone please educate me on why overclocking this gpu is giving me lousy results and why the further I overclock it the worse it gets?

Check in gpuz to see if you got hynix or samsung gddr5 and I would start off around 106 on the core. With 150 you are boosting pretty high there. With no extra voltage you will probably get around 1500 boost with the 106 and if you have samsung ram can probably add close to 500 and still be stable.
These cards come with a pretty hefty overclock already and having the fps go down is probably from throttling the core.

Memory type is Hynix. So what you're saying is I'll need to up the voltage to receive better results?

To get +150 yeah but I can get to about 131 before it needs any more voltage. Hynix is not going to overclock as far on the memory so I would concentrate on the core speed first. I would monitor in the background to see if your core speed is throttling back under load. Overclocking the boost cards is a little different and 150 is probably trying to boost you up into the 1550 range, There is a review on the msi 970 here on [H] that goes over the overclocking and it clocks very similar to the g1. I do not have hynix memory but it sounds like it doesn't clock up as well as the samsung, My everyday gaming overclock is 112 power limit +106 core no extra voltage needed (1496 actual in game) and +500 on memory (hynix doesn't hit as high I've heard). I have even done some bios modding but it really isn't worth the extra voltage for the small gains it gives (still fun to play with). Hopefully someone with some hynix will jump in here for that part for ya. Keep in mind if you do up the voltage it can also add more to your actual boost speed so keep monitoring for awhile and watch for any throttling, voltage and modded bios's can help with the throttling.
